I spent several weeks in Zürich exploring the city and mapping the formerly industrial district of Züri-West while traveling with the Switzerland summer studio at University of Michigan, led by Julie Larsen and Roger Hubeli of Aptum Architecture. From the map:
The redevelopment of Zürich West has depended upon the mediation from factory scale to human scale. Constructions which work within existing structures are common and blur the boundaries between temporary and permanent, industrial and chic. Although the unified "temporary" aesthetic of the district helps to make Züri-West a success, there still exists large gaps in scale and projects that have failed at mediating the industrial scale.
